Rapid Water Safety Response in Elderly Care

Location: Munich, Germany

The Facility: 120-Bed Elderly Care Facility

The Challenge: Rapid Corrective Action Following Confirmed Legionella Contamination

A large elderly care facility in Munich initiated emergency response procedures following confirmed Legionella contamination and operational concerns linked to aging hot water infrastructure and low-flow plumbing sections.

The facility faced immediate operational pressure:

  1. Implement large-scale thermal and chemical remediation procedures that would significantly disrupt daily operations and resident care.

  2. Deploy an immediate outlet-level protection strategy to reduce exposure risk while long-term corrective actions continued in parallel.

The Mentor Water Technologies Solution: Immediate Outlet-Level Protection

Rather than waiting for full infrastructure remediation to be completed, Mentor Water Technologies deployed certified point-of-use filtration products directly at showers and faucets throughout high-risk areas of the facility.

By establishing a physical filtration barrier at the final outlet, the facility implemented immediate interim control measures designed to reduce resident and staff exposure during ongoing remediation activities.

MWT filtration products utilize 0.08 µm hollow fiber membrane technology validated under ASTM F838-20 laboratory protocols and supported by independent European laboratory testing.

Products Used:

  • PurGuard360 (Medical Shower Handle):
Replaced existing handheld showers in high-risk patient rooms. The integrated Log 10 membrane ensures that 99.99999999% of bacteria are physically removed before they can be aerosolized, protecting residents from inhaling contaminated mist during bathing.

  • SkyStream (Fixed/Ceiling Showerhead):
Installed in communal shower areas and luxury suites where fixed-head or rain-style showers were in place. The SkyStream delivers high-flow, medical-grade filtration with an ultra-fine 0.08 µm pore size, providing a safe, compliant overhead shower experience without requiring plumbing modifications.

  • TapTech Pro (Faucet Tap Protector): Installed on clinical sinks and hand-washing stations. This provided an instant, FDA-registered barrier against NTM and other waterborne pathogens, ensuring staff and residents used validated, sterile-grade water for hygiene and wound care.

The Result:

The facility implemented documented interim corrective measures within days while maintaining resident care operations and avoiding major disruption to the facility.

Point-of-use filtration provided immediate outlet-level protection while broader remediation procedures and infrastructure assessments continued in parallel.

The Result: Operational Continuity During Remediation

  • Immediate outlet-level protection implemented across resident-facing water fixtures

  • No major interruption to resident care operations during remediation activities

  • Rapid deployment without large-scale plumbing replacement

  • Technical documentation and laboratory validation data available to support facility water management procedures
